A
funny thing happened on the way to a studio in rural Georgia.
Molly Bancroft, known currently for her co-writing/vocal
stint with hot DJ duo Gabriel and Dresden (aka
Tracking Treasure Down, a hit in the UK) & as the former leader
of altrock band LIFT,
wrote some songs and decided to record them.
This, after much experimentation with loops and textures in her
electro rock solo CD "Get Closer" which
was Rockrgrl Magazine's Grand Prize Winner in 2004 and having
many of the songs on major network TV shows. Molly took a little
time off, but by early '05, she was back in the studio and adding
her textural melodic style of production on singer/songwriter
Emily Boyd's CD, "Wonder."
Flying back and forth to San Fran to write with Gabriel
and Dresden, and returning to the studio, Molly had penned
some songs that were slowly piling up. While Molly was doing home
demos of some of these songs, her friend Emily Boyd wrote
some poetic late night lyric ideas. Soon, the songs were actually
beautiful little stories, each with its own mood and emotional
connection, and Molly decided to record them at a rural studio,
affordable analog tape, and just share them with friends.
It was a long drive to nowhere, starting with these bare bones
of songs, and so, from the very beginning, Molly asked some friends
chip in: Simone Simonton (Lift, Sugarland) on
drums and misc. doodads, Chris Bishop on the
analog board engineering and playing the bass, and Emily
tossing in most of the lyrics, and of course Molly - laying down
some loops and acoustic and electric guitars. It became, over
the span of a year, odd evening drives to track a few more ideas,
and then as Gabriel and Dresden hit the road
to promote their new CD, Molly had some down time. Every Sunday
became the ritual. Finally, Molly realized, these songs were taking
a new and magical shape.
The songs on "Red Dirt Diaries" evoke
emotions of detachment, questioning truths, love, and warmth.
In the making of this CD - which provided an unexpected resting
place away from the trancey beats of Gabriel and Dresden, and
a step away from the fast-paced world of studios and projects
she'd known- the songs felt so refreshing and real. This was music
making old-school style . The cheerful open vibe in the room over
a span of a year... the soft sunsets and cool winter winds of
back roads seeping into the songs-- the crackly country tunes
in the car on the way back to Atlanta after the long Sundays in
the studio... The story of this year of music making has become
Molly's newest CD and second solo effort - Red Dirt Diaries.
Red Dirt Diaries is a perfect title for this
warm inviting and inspiring music made outside of the hustle and
bustle of the city, and out where the frogs are talking loudly
and an occasional hay truck drives by. Not only does each song
feature Molly's signature stunning and candid vocals, but also
the less-is-more instrumentation to let each song shine in it's
own little moment.

What's
On My Mind?
Every
once in awhile I come across a CD that absolutely blows
me away. This is one of them! Molly Bancroft, former
frontwoman of the now defunct Atlanta based trio Lift,
has gone out on her own and is making a place for herself
in the indie music world. Bancroft combines rock, pop,
dance and funk to bring out her own style of exceptional,
imaginative music. Hands down, this is the best CD of
the year!
